In 1895 Carsten Borchgrevink made a disputed claim to be the first person to set foot on the Antarctic mainland. He had been hired as a deck hand on a Norwegian sealing and whaling expedition. When the ship made the first landing at Cape Adare he ran up on shore before the captain. His self-promotion efforts were rewarded in 1898 when he was granted sponsorship to mount the first winter-over expedition on the unexplored continent. The base he built became the first buildings to be erected in Antarctica. The huts have withstood 120 stormy years in the midst of the world’s largest Adélie penguin colony.

Using unique historic and on site footage this series takes us on a journey to the remote Cape Adare, and reveals how this controversial explorer ended his life virtually unknown and destitute.        A film team has returned to this site in the Ross Sea at the northern extremity of the Trans Antarctic Mountains.  On the crest of this mountain ridge we find the world’s most lonely gravesite looking down at Borchgrevink’s huts, now partly buried by penguin guano.      We follow the work of a specialist team from the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust (AHT) as they undertake a complex conservation programme to stabilize the huts while they still can be saved.  This unique documentary series tells the story of the life threatening challenges faced by this first expedition to Cape Adare and compares it with the equally severe problems faced by today’s AHT conservation team.
